For exchange requests that span two periods, we will adjust the GP/Night number as appropriate.

YOUR HOME-AWAY-FROM-HOME: Kick back and watch the sun rise over Lake Tomahawk with the Blue Ridge Mountains as a backdrop at this quintessential Western North Carolina 2BR/1BA 1500 sq ft walkout-basement Guest Suite with private entrance and driveway, two remote-work spaces, and accommodations for up to 6 humans and 1 max 25lb dog. Eat out or stay home and cook with quality counter-top appliances and dine inside or out. On your 15-minute walk to the Black Mountain town center or 20-minute drive to Asheville you’ll be surrounded by nature and never run out of amazing indoor and outdoor activities for the whole crew.
THE GARDENS: The first thing you may notice about the property are the gardens surrounding the building (including raised beds and fruit trees), where the native plant array adds to the mountain retreat feel. You may see the gardener from time-to-time attending to his landscaping tasks, and the Hosts invite you to pick harvest-ready fruits and vegetables for use during your stay.
THE PATIO & FIRE PIT: When you stay at the Lake Tomahawk Suite, you'll have a lower patio view of the lake and mountains with its own outdoor dining and sitting areas and a Weber charcoal grill. You'll also have exclusive use of the fire pit overlooking the lake. (We provide a small bag of charcoal for the grill and a bundle of wood for the fire pit to get you started.)
THE LIVING/DINING AREAS: The Suite living area has a comfortable sofa-bed, two comfy chairs and two Ottomans, a work desk with light, and a large-screen Smart TV. The dining table has seating for 6. You can rest assured that you'll always have a bright, spacious, and comfortable environment for your entire group with lake views from nearly every spot.
THE KITCHENETTE: We are confident that our Guests (especially those who love to cook and eat) will enjoy the Suite kitchenette where two or more can easily work side-by-side. The spacious cabinets and granite countertop, the Samsung French-door cabinet-depth refrigerator, the quiet Bosch dishwasher, and the high-quality countertop appliances (including 3 induction hotplates, a Breville mini-oven that holds up to a 10 lb chicken, and drip and Keurig coffee makers) and induction-ready pots and pans are there for all your cooking needs. We also provide a great assortment of herbs and spices that are sure to please the most demanding cooks, along with other goodies to get you started. (NOTE that the Suite does NOT have a standard built-in oven or cooktop.)
THE BEDROOMS, BATHROOM & LAUNDRY AREA: All Suite sleeping areas are spacious and comfortable: the Master BR (13x17) with a king bed, the Guest BR (11x16) with 2 x long twins, and the living area with an Ethan Allen queen air-mattress sofa-bed. The bathroom has a double vanity, a tub/shower combo, and a stacked washer/dryer.
ENTERTAINMENT & WORKSPACE CONNECTIVITY: The Suite is served by high-speed Internet with Wi-Fi throughout the property. There is a Smart TV in the living area with subscriptions for YouTube TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, and Spotify. There is no land-line phone, but the cell connectivity is good for most providers (you may wish to check your provider's website for their signal-strength map) and your smartphones and other digital devices may have the capability to make calls using the Wi-Fi network. If you want to (or must) bring your work with you, we provide remote office spaces in the living area and master bedroom with two desks and a printer (just download the appropriate printer driver to your digital devices).
GUEST ACCESS: All Suite interior spaces described in this listing and shown in the photos are accessible to your group (with the exception of a locked Host's closet just to the right of the kitchenette and mobile island), and none of the Suite spaces are shared with others. The door immediately to the right of that closet will also be locked as it leads from the Suite spaces to a hallway and stairwell that connect to the House/upper level. Guests also have exclusive use of the lower patio, fire pit, and lower driveway areas.

Walk across Tomahawk Avenue to begin your stroll along the 1/2-mile path around the lake. On the way, you can drop in your kayak for a paddle or stop at the playground with the kids or for a swim (in season) or tennis or croquet at the community facilities at the north end of the lake; or drive 3 minutes to play a round at the Black Mountain Municipal Golf Course (with one of the longest Par 6 holes anywhere); or take a 15 minute hike (or 6 min bike/3 min drive) to downtown Black Mountain stores, coffee shops, and restaurants; or drive 20 minutes to downtown Asheville and experience all that this gem of the Blue Ridge has to offer from bookstores to restaurants to craft breweries to music and museums to the Biltmore Estate where you can take a tour through America's largest home and walk/bike some of the most beautiful trails in WNC. Or if you can stay a bit longer, you'll find amazing day-trip destinations in WNC and beyond.
Although we do have some hills -- it is Western North Carolina, after all : ) -- our neighborhood is very walkable, with our favorite strolls being around the lake, up to and around parts of the Black Mountain Golf Course, or into town. (Note that many of our streets outside the downtown area do not have sidewalks, so care should be taken especially if you take the kids along.)
There is no parking available along Poplar St or Tomahawk Ave, so any vehicles beyond the 2 standard-size car/pickup/van spaces available on the lower driveway of the property would need to be parked elsewhere.

THE ENTIRE PROPERTY consists of a 1500 sq ft 2BR/1BA walk-out basement lower level (this Home Exchange listing, which we call the Lake Tomahawk Suite / sleeps 6 + 1 small dog), a 2400 sq ft 3BR/3BA upper level plus 300 sq ft Bonus Room above the garage (which we call the Lake Tomahawk House / sleeps 8, no pets), and the entire property when both the House and the Suite are booked together (which we call the Lake Tomahawk House & Suite / sleeps 14, no pets). Although we offer the three configurations of the property (the Suite, the House, and the House & Suite together) as vacation rentals, the Suite is currently the only configuration offered through Home Exchange. We may, however, consider exchanges with repeat Guests for the House or the House & Suite booked together (GP/night TBD).

CLEANING FEE: Our $175 cleaning fee (cash or personal check made out to our cleaning team lead) includes the team's $150 end-cleaning fee plus a $25 laundromat/laundry fee. (You may note that our AirBnB listing sets the end-cleaning fee at $120, but we cover the additional $30 cleaning team and $25 laundromat fees for vacation rental Guests.) For stays of 14+ nights we require that the Home Exchange Guest accommodates and (on completion) pays to our cleaning team an additional $50 fee for what we call an "Express Clean" of the Suite kitchenette and bathroom at the halfway point in the stay, or (depending on the length of the stay) every 1-2 weeks as determined by the Host. Any excessive cleaning or damage costs will be addressed separately.
OTHER THINGS TO NOTE: While the Hosts do not offer the House (upstairs) and Suite (downstairs) to two separate/unaffiliated groups at the same time, the Hosts and/or their family/friends may be upstairs in the House during all or part of your Home Exchange stay in the Suite – and will always be respectful of the presence of Suite Guests. In such instances those upstairs may be on the upper deck when Suite Guests are in the lower patio / fire pit areas, and although we installed special noise-dampening insulation between the levels and in the walls between the Suite and adjacent lower-level spaces you may from time-to-time hear footsteps from upstairs or when those in the House need to use the stairwell and adjacent hallway to access the lower-level spaces (HVAC room, storage area, and workshop).
