OVERVIEW
We have a beautiful spot in desirable Nelson County, VA that is nestled in the woods at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains with a flowing creek. Our home sits on 5 spacious acres, and is surrounded by thousands of undeveloped wooded acres so it feels private and tucked away. We designed and built it ourselves, and completed construction in 2012. Some of our favorite features are the large soaking tub in its own private room, and the cedar columns supporting the front porch and the downstairs living space that were cut from our property. We love spending time in a hammock on the screened-in back porch, with the sound of the creek rushing by--but if you want more action, there is plenty to see and do within a short drive.
We are experienced exchangers, and will care for your home as we do our own. Our kids are both world travelers and engaged students. They love to read, play music, and be active outdoors. They are very respectful of other people's homes. We ask that you only send us an exchange request if any children that may accompany you are similarly conscientious and respectful.
DETAILS
There are windows throughout the home, and it has a passive solar design to keep it cooler in summer and allow plenty of natural light in during the winter. The downstairs is an open floor plan with a wood stove, a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area that comfortably seats eight, a kitchen island with barstool seating for four, and a large living space with two comfortable sofas, and a piano. There is also a den downstairs with a two-workstation desk, and it can function as a fourth bedroom with a very comfortable pull out sofa that can sleep two.
There is a vaulted ceiling, so from the living room you can see into the landing on the second floor. There are three bedrooms upstairs, including a master bedroom with a queen bed adjacent to a master bathroom that has a separate tub room. The other two upstairs bedrooms are our children's rooms, each equipped with a twin bed, a child's desk, and a large beanbag chair for relaxing. We also have two twin-sized blow up mattresses that could be placed in any room. The beds and bedding are all-natural materials, and we use only non-toxic cleaning products throughout the home.
In terms of outdoor space, there is a covered front porch with a glider and two Adirondack chairs. The screened-in back porch has a rug and floor pillows as well as a foosball table and a hammock. There is a rustic picnic table for dining outside, as well as a wrought-iron bistro table and chairs. There are also various other spots around the property for relaxing, listening to the creek, and enjoying the natural surroundings.
Conveniences include central air and heating, a Jodul woodstove (available for your use only if you are an experienced wood stove user), a four-burner gas cook stove and oven, dishwasher, washer/dryer, outdoor shower, a TV with DVD player, a home stereo system, and excellent high-speed wireless internet. We have two young children (ages 10 and 12), and so there are a number of books, toys, and board games. The house is generally safe for children, although it's important to be careful with the stairs and the upstairs landing.
We have a wonderful dog who doesn't shed much. If you're allergic to dogs, however, this wouldn't be a suitable spot for you. We have a set up for trash/recycling/compost, and ask that visitors separate and dispose of their waste accordingly. Also, we do not wear shoes in our home, and ask that you do the same. We do not have a housekeeper, and regularly clean the home ourselves. We ask that you keep our home clean on a daily basis, and do a more thorough cleaning when you go, so as to leave our home the way you found it. We would be happy to do the same for yours.

Ce que vous allez adorer dans le quartier
We are located in beautiful Nelson County just off of Route 151, a popular tourist destination in the Rockfish Valley that has a number of breweries, wineries, and restaurants, as well as the Wintergreen Ski Resort (which also has summertime activities, too). From May to October there is an excellent farmers market on Saturday mornings just a few miles away. Our home is at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and hiking options abound in the area, including walking trails right out the back door. We are located 35 minutes from the town of Charlottesville, with excellent dining, live music, arts and cultural opportunities, the University of Virginia, historic sites, and tourist attractions such as Thomas Jefferson's Monticello. We both grew up here and would be happy to share information on our favorite spots. Don't miss visiting Charlottesville and the Blue Ridge Mountains while you are here!
Le mot de la fin
We built this home ourselves (Ethan is a carpenter and designer of sustainable systems, so he designed it and literally built it himself from the ground up), and we completed it in 2012. We love the sustainable design and beautiful custom details. There are creeks running by the house and we can go for Blue Ridge Mountain hikes or bike rides right out our door, or drive 20-30 minutes to the Blue Ridge Parkway or Shenandoah National Park.
In Nelson County we live in the best of both worlds--a beautiful rural area with an abundance of local food, wineries, and breweries that is also only a half hour away from the arts and culture of Charlottesville. Richmond is a 1.5 hr drive, and Washington, DC is 2-2.5 hours from us, and you can dip your toes in the Atlantic Ocean 2.5 hours away in Virginia Beach.
Closest airport is Charlottesville, VA (CHO), at 45 minutes away. Richmond, VA airport (RIC) is a 1.5 hour drive. Washington Dulles International (IAD) is 2.5 hours away, and Reagan National (DCA) is 3 hours. Baltimore International Airport (BWI) is about 3.5 hours away. Car exchange negotiable.
