Ce que vous allez adorer dans le quartier
My youthful memories of nights on the beach, when late night reveling evolved into choruses of ‘Tequila Sunrise’ as the sun rose over the waves, feels like yesterday. My days of those adventures are just memories now, but we’d love to be your source for making memories that will last a lifetime. It’s your turn to see its natural beauty, live 'life on a sandbar' like a local or bask in the simple pleasures while enjoying the best of modern conveniences our beautiful Duck home has to offer.
Instead of dining out, maybe you’d rather ‘catch’ your dinner. There are options:
- Deep sea charter boats take you miles out in the Atlantic for world-class game fishing; wrestle the afternoon away with a blue marlin or yellow fin (http://obxguides.com/charter-fishing?page=1 )
- You’re never more than a few miles from a fishing pier and locals will tell you when schools of fish are abundant; bring a big cooler when the fish are in! (http://www.outerbanksfishing.com/FishingInfo/piers.htm )
- On the surf- with so much uncongested beach, it’s easy to share it with a few fishermen; you never know what you’ll catch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZ_zIbfiHXA )
- Or find an inland waterway and see another side of the Carolina shores (http://www.outerbanks.com/kayaking.html )
History buffs can fill their days with more activities than you can do in your stay. Explore our mutual past in Manteo’s Festival Park/Museum or take in The Lost Colony (http://thelostcolony.org/ ), the longest running outdoor drama in America, performed onsite since 1937 where it actually happened. The North Carolina coast is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic (http://www.graveyardoftheatlantic.com/ ), see and hear accounts of brave watermen’s challenges to save lives across the generations. Maybe you’re more interested in villains from history. Blackbeard roamed these waters too until meeting his death in 1718 (https://www.visitnc.com/trip-idea/walk-in-blackbeard-s-footsteps-on-the-coast ). For an off-the-beaten-track experience, don't miss the wild horses of Corolla- the ancestors of mustangs left behind centuries ago by Spanish explorers. (https://www.outerbanks.com/corolla-wild-horses.html)
Don’t forget OBX history includes aviation as well as maritime exploits; take in the Wright Brothers legacy at the US National Park location (https://www.nps.gov/wrbr/index.htm ) and Wright Memorial. There are other museums to consider as well; see http://www.outerbanks.com/museums.html for the full list.
Bird watchers are also in for a treat here. A key stop along the Atlantic Flyway bird migration route, OBX is brimming with opportunities to spot birds coming to and through this corner of the world. Along with bird-filled beaches, there are parks, wildlife refuges and Important Bird Areas (marked to inform of ongoing conservation efforts) with the right mix of resources to help birds thrive. If it’s ‘birdie’s of another kind you seek, there are golf courses to meet everyone’s skills- from professional to putt-putt aficionados.
Hot summer days turn into warm breezy evenings, time to reflect on your perfect day or consider new adventures for the ones to come. Clear skies dominate starry nights, void of city lights. Spring and autumn are as interesting as the height of the summer season when you literally have the beach to yourself. Winters are cool but even then, sunny days and the natural light in our home creates a cozy atmosphere. Find out what life on a sandbar really means.
