The views and the light! We have been holidaying with our family in our delightful upside-down seaview flat for over 30 years.( see red-lined top 4 windows on the white building in photos 1 and 4.)
We have wonderful views over the sea ( photo 6- taken from the living room window) and over the rooftops of the town ( photos 12-13). The flat is far closer to the sea than the location map can show! The flat is comfortable, centrally heated, very well furnished and decorated- and as part of a well- maintained 1860's building is full of character.
The 2nd floor kitchen is very well equipped and full of light and a lovely space to sit and eat. There are windows on two sides overlooking the town, with views towards the church , brewery and the lovely roofscapes of the town. Warm evenings on the south and west facing balcony are a delight! The comfortable 2nd floor living/ TV room looks east over the sea, with a living flame gas fire for extra cosiness and wonderful views through both windows over the waves- a fantastic retreat in stormy winter weather!
The flat sleeps up to 5 - a double bed in the 1st floor front room, 2 generous singles in the back room, (plus a good fold-away single bed hidden away in a cupboard in the upstairs living room). There is a 1st floor bathroom with bath, over-bath shower and toilet, and a separate second toilet with wash basin.
The west-facing balcony with fabulous roofscape views is our outside sitting space, and we use the gated entrance area as storage for bikes , prams, canoes etc.

Ce que vous allez adorer dans le quartier
Southwold is a delightful old fashioned and well - preserved town with a thriving high street and a variety of intriguing small shops, galleries, pubs and restaurants. It's also home to an iconic lighthouse ( shown in photo 1 taken from just around the corner from our flat), the traditional Adnams brewery and distillery, ( tours available!) the Electric Cinema, (a unique tiny retro cinema squeezed into a converted ropehouse), the timewarp Sailors' Reading Room maritime museum on the clifftop, one of the best piers in the country, a magnificent 15C church and beautiful open spaces or greens within the town. Everything in the town is walkable within 7-8 minutes from our front door.
There are wonderful beach and saltmarsh walks on our doorstep and we often spend a week there without using our car. It's on the driest side of the UK and great for walkers. As it's on the first and second floor it's not ideal for someone with walking/climbing difficulties, especially if you have just walked down to the beach only to find that you've left your sunglasses up on the kitchen table.
Norwich is under 1 hour away and Cambridge can be reached in 2 hours. We happily spend 2 weeks here in the summer- on the beach, around the town, walking to the harbour and over to picturesque Walberswick (great pub!) and further on to Dunwich ( another great pub!) to the south, and to the north to Covehithe with its "church within a ruined church" and its wonderfully remote small saline "broad" or lake.
One of Southwold's special features is its promenade of brightly decorated beach huts. These are wonderful for an after-swim coffee, reading or just relaxing within yards of the water's edge. Many are available for rent by the day or week, and we always have one when we are there for our 2 weeks in the summer.
The Blythe harbour, just a beautiful 25 mins walk along the beach, or across the common and the golf course, is a wonderfully ramshackle collection of boats of all sorts, fishermen's sheds, thriving boat yards, chandlery, pub, fresh and fried fish shacks, a wonderful fish restaurant, an all-day cafe on stilts and a sailing club.

Le mot de la fin
Southwold is regularly featured in the UK press as one of the country's most attractive, characterful and unspoilt seaside towns. It is very highly rated by Which? as a seaside town and specifically as the best seaside town for food in the East of England in 2024.
The flat immediately overlooks the sea (you can lie in bed and listen to the waves!)
Very close to the shops, pubs, restaurants and galleries of the High St (4 mins)
Although possible to get to by train via Ipswich (to the delightful little station at Darsham plus a 20 minute ride by pre-booked taxi), and there are some local buses, getting there by car is far easier.
For birdwatchers, the UK's flagship RSPB reserve at Minsmere is under 25 minutes drive south and music lovers can drive to Snape Maltings in about 35 minutes.
The golf club on the common welcomes visitors.
We have a small off street entrance area suitable for parking bikes/ canoes etc.
As we provide bedding/ linen/towels for the flat but do not live in Southwold we pay for professional cleaning and laundry and certainly for GP visits ask our Home exchange guests to pay the cost of this to us before arrival.
We regret that we cannot allow dogs ( or other pets!) in the flat.
