Local Environment
Long Island Sound is the Grand Canyon of American Sounds – 110 miles long, 21 miles at the widest point. Sheltered from the Atlantic Ocean, the Sound develops it’s own ecosystem along the coast and it is quite distinct from the open ocean seashores.
Spartina grasses in the salt marshes offer sanctuary to young and vulnerable seahorses, oysters and mollusks. These young species breed and grow, protected from the hungry scavengers of the open sea. Once they have survived the vulnerable stage of growth they can move to the open waters. Salt marshes are the heart and soul of the sound. Hawk’s Nest Beach has protected marshes and wetlands adjoining the property.
Black Hall Outfitters can help you explore the surrounding natural environment. The provide tours, kayak and paddle board rentals as well as fishing bait and tackle. Find out more about what they offer here.
