Guests will love the gorgeous scenery, peaceful setting, spacious, well-equipped and completely private apartment. Our large home is located on 2 acres on the lovely Belize River. The home is set into the hillside with the main living area on the upper level and a completely self-contained 700 square foot apartment on the lower level. The apartment is available for home exchange guests beginning the end of January 2022.
Our property is landscaped with many kinds of fruit and nut trees, some of which are almost always in season. The views of the river are entrancing and we often see the cattle from the property across the river coming down for a drink - so bucolic! Once in awhile we even have river otters frolicking near our shore.
Loads of exotic birds - toucans, aricaris, trogons, blue tanagers, hummingbirds, scarlet tanagers, and so many more come to feed or rest or roost in our trees. We're also visited regularly by some of the local howler monkeys with their loud voioces and amusing antics. Many locals enjoy swimming in the river and previous guests have enjoyed fishing in it although the fish they've caught are usually small and we do not recommend eating them.
We have large decks on the upper level in both the front and back of the home. Guests who like to socialize with their hosts are most welcome to use these decks and join us for conversation and perhaps morning coffee or an evening "toddy."
The apartment has a separate entrance and its own covered patio with table and chairs for relaxing outside, doing some bird watching, and enjoying seeing the changing colors and flow of the river. It features a great room/open concept style living/dining/kitchen area with wonderful views of the river and the lawns and many flowering trees. There's a built-in couch along one wall that can double as a twin bed if needed, a settee, side chairs, and a huge coffee table. We also have an inflatable queen bed if needed.
The TV is mounted on a swivel on the wall so it can be used to watch programs from anywhere in the great room or kitchen. The TV is connected to most streaming services and receives about 150 channels of programming.
In addition to a dining table and 4 chairs, there are bar stools adjoining the kitchen for easy conversation while cooking or a quick beverage or snack. The kitchen is separated from the laundry, bath, and bedroom area by a large sliding door.
There's a large bedroom with queen bed, closet and built-in desk, and a laundry area with washer and dryer. The bathroom has a tiled stall shower and Ikea vanity plus a separate door and screen door to the outside for fresh air and a pretty view. Bed and bath linens, toilet paper, soap, shampoo, and conditioner are provided as well.
The kitchen is fully equipped American-style with tile countertops, a large refrigerator/freezer, 6-burner gas stove with oven, microwave, sink, and pantry plus all the necessities: dishes, glassware, flatware, pots and pans. Condiment basics (salt, pepper, sugar, coffee, milk) are included, along with butter, bread, a dozen eggs, strawberry jam, and peanut butter. If guests would like to have some basic necessities stocked in the kitchen prior to arrival, we are happy to do so. Guests will be responsible for the cost of any groceries purchased on their behalf.
In addition to lots of windows, there is an air conditioner in the main room and ceiling fans in the main room and bedroom.
NOTE: There is a $50 US cleaning fee.

Our home is ideally situated: on the Belize River, on the main highway, less than 6 miles from the capitol, Belmopan, located in the geographic center of Belize. Teakettle is a quiet village in the heart of the eco-friendly Cayo District.
It's easy to understand why Belize is rated a top tropical destination by organizations such as National Geographic and Conde Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, and many more. The world famous ATM Cave is just up the road while stunning Mayan ruins including Xunantunich and Cahal Pech are less than 20 miles away. The amazing Belize Zoo is about 30 minutes away while the gorgeous beaches of Hopkins and Placencia are 1-1/2 and 2 hours away respectively. Stunning Caracol makes for a terrific day trip with, perhaps, a stop at Rio On pools for a refreshing dip on the way home. The Green Iguana Project in San Ignacio, a conservation trust to save these endangered animals and educate the public about them, is not to be missed! Watch cacao beans being made into delicious chocolate at Lamanai Chocolate on a drive down the spectacular Hummingbird Highway to visit St. Hermann's Blue Hole or onwards to Hopkins. Diving, snorkeling, fishing, and other marine activities are available off the coast from Hopkins and Placencia. Tikal National Park in neighboring Guatemala is a popular destination and can be arranged as a day trip with a local tour company. A suggested itinerary for exploring Belize is available upon request.
For those who prefer not to rent a car, we're located on the main highway and the local bus stop is right at our driveway. From there you can take a "busito" (an 8-passenger van) into Belmopan or catch a bus to explore anywhere in the country.
Our property is planted in all kinds of fruits, some of which will undoubtedly be in season! Bananas, plantain, guava, papaya, passion fruit, ackee, limes, oranges, mulberries, cacao, coffee plants, pineapple, and, of course, loads of coconuts!
Teakettle is a small village with just a couple of stores where you can buy necessities but Belmopan, which is 15 minutes away, has virtually everything you could wish for: from a marvelous twice weekly veggie market to numerous grocery and hardware stores, even a department store!
We have two German Shepherds who are our guard dogs and loving companions as well as two friendly cats, one of whom is "addicted" to peanuts! Our property is fully fenced, with exterior security cameras and an electric entrance gate to the driveway.
If your visit occurs in mid-March, you likely will be treated to front row viewing of the famous La Ruta Maya canoe race. You can watch as the canoes with their 3-person racing teams paddle down the river to the cheers of local school children and neighbors.
If you enjoy an occasional swim, virtually all of the resorts in Belize are happy to have you use their pool if you purchase a meal or some beverages.
