Ce que vous allez adorer dans ce logement

Our home is located in small gated community adjacent to a nature reserve overlooking the Central Valley. We are located about 30 minutes from the SJO airport and 1 hr from Jaco beach. The beaches of Playa Mantas and Playa Blanca are less than an hour away.
We highly recommend renting a vehicle. An SUV or car are fine, but if you plan to explore more of Costa Rica, rent an SUV. You can also hire private drivers to take you wherever you like if you prefer not to navigate narrow, curvy roads.
If you are a bird lover, then Costa Rica is a premiere destination. We regularly have two types of toucans at our feeders, tanagers, orioles, hummingbirds, oropendulas, parakeets, trogons and mot mots in our yard. There are other excellent birding destinations nearby to see scarlet macaws and a multitude of other birds.
My hobby and passion is the botanical garden I have created and tend to as well as observing the diversity of birds, hummingbirds and other critters.
Atenas is a small town with an expat community and over 1,000 small coffee farms.
While we are not a beach home, there are many other things to love about our area. We are close to beautiful waterfalls to explore and 2.5 hours from La Fortuna so we always recommend an overnight stay in that area to visit world class hot springs.
Our home is truly an oasis and magical in that the area is quiet and has lots of natural beauty.
We like to think of our living style as high end glamping with all the windows and the fact we do not need air conditioning or heating because the temperatures drop into the upper 60’s (around 20 degrees Celsius) at night and rises to the 80’s (around 30 degrees Celsius)during the day.
We have done a number of exchanges on another platform and many of the guests feedback say our home truly feels like an escape from chaos because of the natural surroundings including the gardens and wildlife. If you are looking for parties and museums this place is not likely to meet your expectations.

Additional info: we do not have air conditioning or heating, except for one bedroom with a window air conditioning unit. The temperatures, year round are cool upper 60’s (around 20 Celsius) at night and mid 80’s (around 30 Celsius) during the day). The master bedroom has a king size bed and full bath. The detached guest house has a king size bed and queen size bed and full bath. The back guest room has a Murphy double size bed and full bath.
The weather in our area does not vary much, temperature wise. The sun is up early every day around 5:45 am and it’s dark by 6:30 pm because of the proximity to the equator.
During February and March we can have really windy days, September and October are the rainiest months, but usually just heavy showers for a couple of hours late afternoon. Costa Rica does have a lot of microclimates weather can vary from one area to another. We have two seasons, the green/rainy season (even though we rarely have rain all day…usually late afternoon showers that last an hour or two). The dry months are December to early April when the showers begin.

We always welcome exchange requests within Costa Rica too throughout the year. We are 30 minutes from Escazu and 20 from Santa Ana/Lindora and 30 minutes from Alajuela.

We are retired so we are flexible with dates …surprise us with a request and feel free to ask questions.

We do have an outdoor cat that we ask be fed once a day in the morning, but we can arrange to be fed if you take overnight trips.

IMPORTANT: Remember, we live adjacent to a nature reserve in a country with over 70,000 types of insects so communal living is part of life here. If you have a phobia about bugs, critters or such, our place is not for you. We have our house sprayed a couple times of year, but it’s virtually impossible to keep the interior of our home 100 percent bug free.

Here is an amazing video a guest made of her stay at our guest house in early 2025.

La Paz is about 2 hrs from our home

Great sanctuary if you love sloths, macaws, monkeys …about 1.5 hr away by car. We love to leave early and combine with El Encanto Waterfall in Esparza

If you love coffee, be sure to visit Alsacia on the way to or from La Paz and Poas

La Fortuna, a favorite destination has world class hot springs. Travel time can be close to 3 hrs through San Ramon, but pretty drive. Spend the night and check out day passes at:

https://www.tabacon.com/

or another favorite place

https://www.thespringscostarica.com/

The Bajos del Toro area is another favorite with several waterfalls to explore. Be sure to take the road through Zarcero. Travel time to Bajos is about 1.5 hrs. It can be cool up there so take a light jacket.

While in the area check out Catarata Rio Agrio (see their Facebook page), Catartas Las Gemelas or Los Manantiales.

Another favorite waterfall about 1 hr away in Tacares is Los Chorros. Our friend, David, can take you or give you information about the place. Worth the visit if you don’t mind a 35 or so minute hike. Two great waterfalls in one place.

Poas Volcano is about 1.5 hrs away, but you must make reservations online before you go.

There is a cocoa tour that several guests have gone and enjoyed called Choco Tour in San Mateo about 40 minutes away.

Nearest nice beach is Playa Mantas in Punta Leona about 1 hr away. Bumpy road to get there off main road, but good public parking if you get there early. There is a toll road so take coins if you can for the toll.

You can also make a great day trip from Los Sueños in Herradura to visit Isla Tortuga aka Tortuga Island.

Le mot de la fin

PLEASE NOTE: While we love children, but our home is not child friendly. We have steep drop offs around our property, and floor to ceiling windows on the front of the house and glass coffee tables. Our pool is designed also for adults. If your children are around 10 years old and above and well behaved you may reach out via private message to discuss. Our neighborhood is comprised of mainly over 55 retired residents who prefer peace and quiet so no partying or loud guests.

NO SMOKING ALLOWED.

We have an outdoor, low maintenance kitty that needs fed once in the mornings. We have a gardener, Charlie, who has worked for us for 10 years that can feed kitty on Mondays and Thursdays. I can schedule someone to feed the kitty too if you take any overnight trips during your stay here we can get someone to feed her.

We are open to considering short stays if interested in a stay close to the SJO airport. We have a detached guesthouse which can be used for lesser guest point stays if you don’t mind us being here. The guest house has a full restroom with shower and a king and queen size bed.

We do not typically travel the last two weeks of December or first week of January due to high airfares and crowded airports. The same is true for third week in November or Easter week. We also try to stay home during the last week of March and first week in April since it can be very dry and windy and we are at risk of fires during that period. October is wide open for availability every year, but travelers should be aware it is the rainiest month. However, that doesn’t mean rain everyday…we can go several days without rain and rarely does it rain all day.

We also live in a gated community with a kind of steep road that any car can handle, but just want exchangers to know. Costa Rica is not known for great roads so it is recommended not to drive at night. Lots of pot holes and drop offs in some areas prone to fog.

Costa Rica has a multitude of terrain and microclimates for such a tiny country. One suggestion to our prospective guests is to maybe use our home for a base or book another location to explore and then end up at our place since we are close to the airport and our home is a great place to unwind and relax.
There are a number of inexpensive places to stay in La Fortuna to explore as an outing for a night or two as Tenorio National Park where Rio Celeste is located,
Zip lining, deep sea diving and tours to Isla Tortuga are less than an hour away.

We are about 1.5 hrs from La Paz Waterfall Gardens
Approximately 30 minutes from Starbucks only coffee farm, Alsacia
About 1.5 hours from Poas Volcano
About 1 hr from Jaco
About 1.5 hr to Natuwa Macaw Rescue
About 2.5 hours from La Fortuna/Arenal
About 1.5 hrs from Bajos del Toro and Catarata Dios Ríos (great waterfall and dinosaur animatronic park

Dave & Dave’s Nature Park (link below) is a great day or overnight trip for avid birders.

Great weather pretty much all year. Costa Rica is a small country with many microclimates. You can Google Earth our neighborhood by searching for Lomas del Paraiso Atenas

If you enjoy nature, bird watching, complete relaxation then this is your zen place.
