Ce que vous allez adorer dans ce logement
This sprawling 3,200+ square-foot, traditional walled adobe house was built in the early 1800s by Spanish settlers to Taos. The house is named Quixote's Canyon as an homage to this Spanish history and the metal sculpture of famed Spanish literary character, Don Quixote, (yes, the windmill fighting guy) who welcomes you at the entrance.
Quixote’s Canyon is set in a pastoral valley, tucked into a hillside to the north, forming a canyon-like hollow in the landscape. The house sits on hundreds of acres of open land surrounding it. Views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the southern edge of the Rocky Mountains, are framed by miles of silvery sagebrush where magpies, jackrabbits and coyotes roam. Outside our home you'll find an ancient rock escarpment covered with Anasazi petroglyphs.
This gorgeous, luxurious adobe home with hand-made details invites you inside its private garden walls.
The Home
Enter through the time-weathered front gate up the path to the expansive flagstone patio complete with outdoor kiva fireplace. Passing through the hand-carved wooden front doors with hand-hammered wrought iron hardware, you enter a different world.
The Living Room (aka Frida’s Room)
A caramel-colored leather couch and loveseat, and turquoise velvet swivel chairs provide ample comfy seating in the living room overlooking the Sangre de Cristo range. Snuggle in with a book on the long chaise by the entry, or on the saffron leather chair with copper lamp and embroidered ottoman. Radiant-heat warms the house through the wide-plank pine wood flooring. Please take extra care of grandma’s wood tables and the needlework Frida pillows.
The Dining Room
A large wooden dining table with ornately hand-carved chairs provide seating for six. Tabletop items (hot plates and trivets, placemats, napkins, etc.) are found in the antique sideboard. A Navajo rug and large copper tray hang on the walls as well as photos of our kachina collection and some of the petroglyphs on the rock formation outside. The sideboard contains a panini maker, a crock pot, extra plates and serving dishes and a raft of chess boards and other board games.
The Kitchen
Cabinet door corners are studded with Taos blue stones and painted with petroglyphs as an homage to the Anasazi drawings on the rock escarpment outside. Brand-new stainless steel appliances and quartzite countertops make cooking fun in this well-appointed recently renovated kitchen with an oak kitchen table set seating four. The large blue-toned painting on the wall is done by well-known Taos artist, Nancy Lee Stewart, who lived in this house for 35+ years, one of a handful of owners of this historically significant property.
The Sitting Room
Through the hand-carved doors toward the master suite, find an intimate sitting room with a leather couch and chair as well as a smart TV and console desk overlooking the front patio. This room is an ideal private workspace for everything from trainings and web conferences to solitary work on your novel or sketch diary. This room is technically a bedroom but it is no longer set up as a bedroom.
King Bedroom Suite
A Cal-King bed appointed with sumptuous sheets and duvet comforter nestles into a cave-like space framed by low-hanging ‘vigas’ logs and gilded bird lamps on the bedside tables. A leather armchair is an elegant place to relax. The generous closet provides a chest of drawers, hangers and a folding luggage rack.
Deep inside the king suite bathroom, you’ll find a generous shower stall with granite bench, a hand-held shower and luxurious towels, as well as a TOTO washlet bidet.
The Guest Room Ensuite
This king-size bed overlooking the portale garden can be converted into two XL twin beds if requested at booking. The glass bedside lamps with pressed flower shades belonged to Grandma. The jewel-tone painting on the wall is by Taos artist and former homeowner, Nancy Lee Stewart. In the closet, find additional pillows, a quilt and outdoor games including a badminton and horseshoe set.
Get ready to experience the most luxurious bathtub in all of Taos. This deep tub will delight even the most ski-sore muscles. Whimsical purple cabinets and star-themed tiles in the tub surround provide an artistic Taos experience in this stunning just-renovated bathroom
The Den (aka third bedroom, aka Media Room)
Walking back through the kitchen to the dining room, climb the red stone stairs passing the door to the private portale garden. At the top of these stairs there’s a third full bath with a traditional tin mirror and a shower stall. On the upper level you’ll find a third bedroom with wooden bunk beds (weight limit 200lbs.) and a queen-size pull-out couch. The media den is lined with red Navajo rugs, modern standing lamps and a large television. Please sign into your favorite apps on this Smart TV.
The Portale Garden and Hot Tub
Through the door on the stairwell landing, head outside to the festive portale porch where you’ll find a comfortable couch, butcher block table, outdoor grill and sparkling lights. Follow the flagstone path to the corner of the garden for a dip in the hot tub. Please please for everyone’s safety please shower before jumping in.
The Grounds
There is a pump house at the driveway entrance, as well as a horse barn to the west and a shepherd’s hut, a reminder of the property’s history as a sheep ranch, to the east. These structures are very fragile so we ask that you do not enter the outbuildings although you are welcome to stroll the horse pasture or walk to the top of the road to the main gate. To the east of the house, don’t miss a walk to the large rock “escarpment” outcropping covered with 500-1000 year-old Anasazi petroglyphs. See if you can find the pyramid-shaped rock with a spiral and an arrow pointing to Blue Lake, a sacred site of the Taos Pueblo tribe (see photo)
You may enter the house through the front gate or through the portale door off the covered carport to the rear of the house where there is a sitting area and a grill . For your protection, all doors are monitored by security cameras (but not of the hot tub area! )
Off the portale, follow the flagstone stepping stones to the brand new hot tub (not on camera!) Also off the portale you'll find the utility room with a washer/dryer.
Guests will have access to the entire home as listed. Private owner areas are kept locked and not advertised to guests.

Ce que vous allez adorer dans le quartier
This is not a remote mountain home. It’s very centrally located, just 7 minutes to the historic Taos plaza and 25 minutes to the Taos Ski Valley. The address on Home Exchange says El Prado but it is in TAOS! This area of Northern New Mexico is less than an hour to Colorado and just over an hour to beautiful Santa Fe. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat then our house will delight you. Taos is an authentic town in the Southwest far away from the commercialism of other towns. Maybe this is the reason it is so popular with a particular kind of culture and history loving tourist.
Located in a private gated community, this unique property offers a peaceful escape while never far from all the cultural and recreational highlights that define Taos.
From the Taos Pueblo, a continuously inhabited Native American community and UNESCO site, you can catch a glimpse of old Taos (Tiwo for 'red willow'), one of the oldest towns in America settled by the Spanish long before the United States were formed. A few miles down the road, there is Rancho de Pueblo, the famed church of San Francisco with its perfect adobe proportions.
The historic Taos Plaza is just a few minutes drive where you will find wonderful restaurants as well as art galleries, museums galore and boutiques full of Native American treasures.
There are many hot springs in the area as well as superb hiking in the summer and skiing in the winter.
The winters bring excellent skiing opportunities and the summers are cool and green at 7,000 feet.
