We've been active on Home Exchange for 15+ years now, and we've had many successful exchanges with wonderful couples from around the world. We're international expats who have spent most of our lives abroad, but we are currently mainly in Scotland for family reasons.
Our Scottish Borders apartment is one of our second homes: it's located on a small age-exclusive estate with many 50+ year old professionals around. The apartment has a large balcony with lovely views of the famous Eildon hills, and plenty of communal gardens and outdoor spaces to enjoy. Rabbits, multiple birds, and a small herd of deer are often seen in the gardens. There is ample private parking. The house is double-glazed and centrally heated throughout. It is 45 minutes drive from Edinburgh or just under one hour on the direct train. It is also on the direct bus route to most Border towns and to Edinburgh too.
There is a bright sunny lounge with beautiful views of other hills from its bay window. It leads to the modern kitchen which is fully equipped with all the necessary white goods. There are two double bedrooms with ample wardrobe space. One has a fitted study area and the other leads onto a spacious balcony with furniture on it; it is a lovely place to sit with a drink and look at the famous Eildon hills (extinct volcanos) over the manicured gardens. There is a modern bathroom with a power-shower.
Please note that there are some internal stairs (carpeted and with a rail) to get up to our first floor apartment.
The apartment is less than 5 minutes walk into the countryside, and to the Tweed river, where there are wonderful walks along the signposted Southern Upland Way. There is a fantastic gym only 5 minutes walk away, and a small corner shop/post office close by. We also get deliveries from the fishmonger and baker on the estate regularly, so you don't have to go far to shop. When you need more items, it is a 15-20 minutes walk into the town centre, down leafy residential streets, or you can hop on one of the two buses outside our drive, taking you straight into town or even direct to Edinburgh if you want to stay on it.
The town has a railway station which connects you to Edinburgh, Scotland's fabulous capital. This makes it easy to have days in Edinburgh, and beyond, experiencing history, culture, the Edinburgh Festival's, gastronomy, the coast at Leith, film, music and opera, and then to come back to a peaceful location each evening.
The town has a population of around 13,000, three large supermarkets, many smaller ones plus speciality shops, a post office, cinema, and so on. The famous 'National Tapestry of Scotland' has just opened here in a brand-new museum.

For those who want to explore the local area, you can:
Take the BORDERS ABBEY WAY, a 107km circular route, featuring some of the Borders' oldest historic abbeys. You can get buses from the end of our road to all the Border towns.
TAPESTRY, TWEED & TEXTILES: The Borders has been famed since the 13th century for its textiles. Visit the new museum in Galashiels holding the Great Tapestry of Scotland (www.scotlandstapestry.com), the longest embroidered tapestry in the world. Made with enough yarn to scale Ben Nevis 74 times, the Tapestry tells the "story of Scotland" in 160 intricate panels, from the Battle of Bannockburn to the reconvening of the Scottish Parliament in 1999.
HIKE OR BIKE: The Southern Upland way is only a 5 minute walk from our house. In Galashiels, the Hike & Bike Hub (https://hikebikegalashiels.co.uk) offers information about local walking and cycling routes, Walk It walks, led cycle rides and, of course, bike and e-bike hire.
GOLF: Pick from 24 golf courses close by and play at astonishingly reasonable prices.
FISHING: The world-famous River Tweed has some of the best fishing in Scotland, and is only a few minutes walk from our home
RUGBY: Where else could you watch this but at Edinburgh Murrayfield? Or you could stay local and watch rugby at our local club, only minutes away.
Watch - or ride in - THE OLDEST EQUESTRIAN FESTIVAL IN THE WORLD.
Taking place in 11 Border towns from June-August annual, the "Common Ridings" date back to 13th and 14th centuries when Scottish Border towns rode in groups along the boundaries to protect themselves from English invaders. The Rough Guide has described the Common Riding as "one of Britain's best-kept secrets" and "an equestrian extravaganza that combines the thrills of Pamplona's Fiesta de San Fermin with the concentrated drinking of Munich's Oktoberfest".
ABBOTSFORD - the home of Sir Walter Scott (who doesn't know his poem 'Auld Lang Syne'...!). Gorgeous grounds to walk or picnic in; woodland trail; shop and lovely cafe/resturant, plus events such as book festivals throughout the year.

Le mot de la fin
BEAUTIFUL, FIRST-FLOOR, PEACEFUL, 2-BEDROOMED APARTMENT IN SCOTTISH BORDERS & CLOSE TO EDINBURGH. Located only a few minutes walk from countryside and town alike. Ideal base for exploring Edinburgh, the Borders & the area.
NO SMOKERS, PETS, OR CHILDREN UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE, I'm afraid.
CLEANING FEE: We've finally decided after 10 years of exchanges, that we ought to put on a small cleaning fee if we are doing an exchange for Guest Points. We have a lovely local lady who will ensure the apartment is spotless before and after your stay, and who will do all the laundry afterwards too. She charges £15 an hour and does the apartment and all the washing/drying in two hours, so we would ask that you pay her £30 for your stay. Some guests come by car and want to bring their own bedlinen and towels; if so, she would only charge £15 for the cleaning.
