Ce que vous allez adorer dans ce logement

Our fabulous family home was fully renovated in 2005 to the highest standards, while retaining its rustic charm and character. Originally a farmhouse dating back about 200 years, we have added to the living accommodation by converting the adjoining barn into the living area, retaining the original beams. Each of our 4 bedrooms are large and have an en-suite bathroom, all with a shower and one with a bath. The house is spacious and filled with light, the big windows on every side giving fantastic views of the surrounding countryside.

The warm Mediterranean climate in south west France is perfect for enjoying the 11 x 6 metre swimming pool and large al fresco poolside dining area, complete with gas barbecue. The kitchen door leads out onto another smaller patio, and there is also a roof terrace, both of which are equipped with tables and chairs, giving lots of options for outdoor dining, or just having a drink while enjoying the view and the lovely sunsets over the valley. We have a big garden with pond, children’s toys and trampoline. A wonderfully peaceful retreat but within easy reach of so many historic and beautiful places to explore.

We have four cats, 2 chickens and an aquarium of fish, but they really are all low maintenance. The cats generally spend most of their time outdoors as Nick is allergic to them. We’re therefore very careful to keep the house free of cat hair, so those with allergies don’t need to worry.

Ce que vous allez adorer dans le quartier

Our house stands alone in beautiful countryside between two small pretty villages, Saint Julien du Puy and Montdragon. We are in a very peaceful rural location, and yet remarkably close to an amazing variety of landscapes and other attractions. We are surrounded by rolling hills mainly taken over to arable agriculture, but nearby are the Tarn Gorges, the rocky outcrops of the Sidobre National Park, beautiful mediaeval towns such as Lautrec, 7km away, from where the famous painter Henri Toulouse-Lautrec took his family name, and picturesque Albi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is just 25 minutes drive away. Slightly further away at an hour’s drive is Toulouse, France’s 4th biggest city, and all the delights it has to offer. Throughout the year, and especially in the summer months, there are many festivals, fairs and fetes in all the surrounding towns and villages, celebrating foods, music, dance etc. We can provide details of what’s on locally during the period of your stay.

- Buzzy restaurants: Within 5 minutes drive of the house we have 3 good restaurants which are always popular with the locals, La Millesime and the Auberge de la Ferme, both in Montdragon, and l’Imperial in Laboutarié. Lots of fantastic restaurants to choose from in Albi and other locations. We are happy to provide recommendations.
- Cool bars: Café Plum in Lautrec is a bar/café/book library/live music venue. All through the summer months they have live bands performing apero concerts virtually every night in the old courtyard. Great place to chill and enjoy the atmosphere. They offer a simple menu but best to book in advance on concert nights to be sure of getting food and a table.
- Cozy cafés: La Ferme au Village in Lautrec is nestled in a courtyard behind the Compagnie du Pastel souvenir shop. The markets mentioned below all have cozy little cafes which are great places for people watching.
- Retail therapy: Albi is great for shopping with lots of lovely boutiques selling stylish French clothes, accessories, home wares and local crafts. For a wider selection head for Toulouse. There also lots of fantastic farmers markets nearby selling a variety of locally sourced fresh produce and handicrafts. To name a few; Realmont on Wednesdays, Gaillac on Fridays, Revel on Saturdays, and on a smaller scale but less than 15 minutes from the house Graulhet on Sundays.
- Bit of culture: Visiting the spectacular Albi cathedral and next door to it the Toulouse Lautrec museum with lots of his famous paintings are a must. There are many other interesting museums in Albi and also Castres, another pleasant town which lies 25 minutes drive to the south. The Goya museum in Castres has the largest collection of Goya’s art works anywhere in the world outside Spain.
- Walks in the park: The most beautiful gardens just half an hour’s drive away are the Jardins de Martels with Asian temples, tropical greenhouse, bamboo labyrinth and mini-farm. The gardens of the Bishop’s Palace in Albi give wonderful views over the river. From the centre of Castres take the short ride on the little riverboat out to the Parc Gourjade, a large park with a big children’s play area and crazy golf. The gardens of the Musée des Beaux Arts in Gaillac are also very enjoyable to take a stroll in.
- Spot of exercise: The old railway line just 10 minutes drive from the house is a great place to go walking, jogging. or cycling ( we have bicycles available to borrow). At Ambialet there is a big loop in the river Tarn making it a popular spot to go kayaking and there are several companies there you can hire kayaks from. For more energetic exercise plan a long walk in the Sidobre taking in some of the incredible rock formations known locally as Goose Rock and the Three Cheeses because of their shape.
- Day tripping: This region is steeped in history so there are many choices . Visit the walled mediavial towns of Cordes sur Ciel and Penne to the north of Albi . With their narrow cobbled streets and ancient buildings you’ll feel like you’ve stepped back in time to mediaeval days. Children will love visits to the Zoo des Trois Vallées or a ride on the steam railway near GIroussens and the Jardins des Martels, or a trip to the impressive Chateau de Coupiac where mediaeval costumes are provided so the children can dress up as a knight or maiden for the day.
