Ce que vous allez adorer dans ce logement

The Island has been closed throughout 2024 to undergo a major renovation, reopening in January 2025. We will then be considering short notice swaps, out of high season, for guest points only. The reason for short notice only is that we have many guest points accumulated which we have not been able to spend during the COVID period, so we will be spending those before taking more long notice swap requests as we don’t really need more guest points yet. But, once the renovation is complete, if the house is not booked by paying guests at short notice out of high season we will be open to swap requests for guest points. We will reassess the situation as to long term bookings once we are able to travel more freely round the world and have spent some of our points.

The Island sits just off the surfing town of Newquay on the beautiful North coast of Cornwall, South-West England. The only way on to the Island is by suspension footbridge, which leads to our three-bedroom house. At high tide the Island is surrounded by water. At low tide it is surrounded by sand, and you can be on the beach below the Island in 60 seconds.

The house takes up to 6 guests. The master bedroom (four poster double) is upstairs, together with dressing room and shower room. All other rooms are downstairs, including a second bedroom (double or twin) with small ensuite shower room, and a third bedroom (double or single) which uses the communal bathroom/WC with bath. The other downstairs rooms are a kitchen/breakfast room, living room/dining room, games room/bar, and conservatory. There is also a utility room with washing facilities, accessed from outside.

Our lovely housekeeper prepares the house for guests and is usually on-hand for any queries. We welcome dogs but please keep them off the furniture. The beach below the Island is dog-friendly all year round.

Wheelchair access is sadly very difficult: from the road, there is a short public path then around 20 steps down a public stairway (which continues on down to the beach). There are two or three steps down from the bridge onto the Island. The master bedroom is up one flight of stairs.

To get to Newquay you can drive (we have a garage), take the train (we are a few minutes' walk from the station), or fly (then just 20 minutes by taxi from Newquay airport). You do not need a car to explore Newquay, but if you would like to explore more of Cornwall then car hire is easily available.

We have the house professionally cleaned and managed, so we ask LHS guests to pay the £200 cleaning/preparation fee charged by our very friendly and helpful housekeeper.

North Cornwall is a beautiful part of the world, with dramatic cliffs and sandy beaches. It can be sunny and stormy, often in the same day. The Atlantic waves can be dramatic. For example, walking distance from the Island is Fistral beach which attracts world class surfers: https://www.boardmasters.com/explore/fistral

Newquay is a lively holiday and surfing town. In the peak summer season it is busy with holidaymakers, with the downside that it can be noisy at night especially at weekends. Out of peak season it is much less busy and quieter. The Island is completely separate and private.

There are plenty of shops, bars, restaurants, entertainment places etc within a few minutes' walk. You can travel to Newquay by car (we have a two car garage), train (the station is walking distance), airplane (Newquay airport is 15-20 minutes by cab, check flybe.com for flights) or coach. You do not need a car to get anywhere in Newquay as everywhere is in walking distance, or taxi if you prefer. If you wanted to explore the rest of the wonderful county of Cornwall you would be advised to rent a car.

- Buzzy restaurants: Plenty of good restaurants. For excellent quality food and venue, look at Jamie Oliver's Fifteen at Watergate Bay: https://www.fifteencornwall.co.uk/
- Cool bars: 3 minutes walk from the Island, great cocktails at Tom Thumb: https://www.tom-thumb.co.uk/
- Cozy cafés: At low tide walk directly along the beaches to Lusty Glaze Beach Bar & Restaurant for drinks, food, live music and the best hot chocolate: https://www.lustyglaze.co.uk/
- Retail therapy: For high fashion look elsewhere. For surf shops, and everything you would expect in a busy seaside town, Newquay has lots of shops a few minutes' walk from the Island..
- Bit of culture: You come to Newquay for the coast rather than the culture, but there are plenty of attractions to keep adults and children amused within walking distance. For more traditional culture you may have to get in the car and explore elsewhere in Cornwall - one of our favourites is the Minack Theatre, dramatically cut into a cliff top amphitheatre: https://www.minack.com. Artists should visit St Ives for the Tate and Hepworth museums.
- Walks in the park: At low tide there is a large expanse of sandy beaches. At high tide there are cliff top walks further than you could reasonably go in a month, as we are on the 630 mile South West Coast path: https://www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk:
- Spot of exercise: Down the steps and in 60 seconds you are in the sea! There are also lots of sporting facilities on our doorstep. In the water: surfing, kayaks, SUPs, coasteering etc. On land: walking, some cycle paths (check out the Camel Trail), go-karting, jungle gyms, actual gyms. Newquay atttracts stag and hen parties in the summer so has a wide variety of group adventure activities.
- Day tripping: Cornwall is a beautiful county, with lots of great places to visit, best explored by car as public transport round the county is poor. Just a few of our favourites are The Lost Gardens of Heligan (https://www.heligan.com), the Isles of Scilly (a short flight from nearby Newquay airport: https://www.cornwallairportnewquay.com/where-can-i-fly/isles-of-scilly), tiny seaside villages like Polperro, King Arthur country at Tintagel, the Eden Project as an example of transforming a former quarry into a space-age jungle, St Michael's Mount (though we do have our own Island that is surrounded by the sea twice a day, and which you might enjoy so much you don't want to leave...).
