"...And a window looking on the mountains and the sea, how lovely!" The song Corcovado embodies the extravagant beauty of the location of our home in San Ramon, Costa Rica. Although there are neighbors close by in our secure, gated communtiy, our home is completely private, surrounded by lush tropical gardens on an acre of land. There's also an organic vegetable garden and a variety of fruit trees to which you may help yourself during your stay. For those of you from the Medeterranean region seeking an escape from the heat and tourists of summertime, look no further. The temperature up on our little mountain averages 72 - 78 farenheit or 22 - 27 celcius.
Our house is an hour north of the San Jose airport. In little more than an hour from our house in any direction there are wonderful day trips to make to visit the volcanos, Arenal and Poas, where you will find hot springs, even a hot river fed by underground volcanic springs at the resort Tabacon, zip lining, kayaking, hikes down gorgeous waterfalls, a waterfall park, the Pacific beaches, the closest one being only a 45 minute drive from our house, Playa Dona Ana. You're also about the same distance from the capital city of Costa Rica, San Jose, where you will find wonderful art museums with collections of everything from pre Columbian pottery, gold and jade, to contemporary art. There are also cultural events at the theaters in San Jose, like Teatro Nacional, which is a national architectural treasure.
Our home, on which we completed construction five years ago, is perched on the last ridge of the mountain range surrounding the Central Valley of Costa Rica. The back of the house features all glass walls in both bedrooms and throughout the living room to maximize the breathtaking view of the nearby nature preserve, rolling lush farmland and forests that meander down to the Sea of Nicoya which is the central feature of the view. You can look across the sea to the Nicoya Peninsula and the little islands off the coast of the peninsula that dot the shoreline. There's no need for either heat or air conditioning here, since the temperature hovers around 72 degrees farenheit (22.2 celcius) year round. Each room has ceiling fans.
We have paid homage to the brilliant local artisans by filling our home with beautiful handmade furniture and tiles made right here in Costa Rica, with the exception of the bathrooms which feature Mexican Talavera tiles. The kitchen is large and fully equipped with high end appliances and kitchen gadgets. My husband and I both love to cook. Near the kitchen sink, there is a pass-through window to facilitate service to the outdoor covered front terrace with dining/living room which is open-air on three sides, and bordered by one of our tropical gardens on one side.
It's only a ten minute drive to downtown San Ramon where you can find everything you need. There are gourmet shops, restaurants serving a wide variety of cuisines, department stores, and large grocery stores. There's also a small shopping mall with a movie theater. There's a very large shopping mall in Alajuela, which is very near the airport.
One the back terrace, which is also sheltered by a vine and flower covered pergola, there is another outdoor dining area and lounge chairs from which to watch the spectacular sunsets, and a fifty jet therapeutic hot tub which also overlooks the Sea of Nicoya.
We have gardeners who come twice a week, and a housekeeper who comes once a week. They have been in our employ for several years now, and we trust them implicitly. Whatever is ripe from the garden, the gardeners will bring up to the house for you to enjoy or allow them to bring home to their families.

Home & location
Casa Motmot is a two bedroom, two bath, one story, new home perched on the outermost band of the mountains surrounding the Central Valley of Costa Rica, 3,000 feet above sea level. The year round temperature hovers around 72 degrees farenheit, or 22.2 degrees celcius. The expansive view is of a pristine nature preserve and the rolling hills and farmlands leading all the way down to the Nicoya Bay and peninsula. We are located just a 45 minute drive from the nearest Pacific beach, Playa Dona Ana. We live in a small gated community of seven homes. The front porch, which is surrounded by lush tropical gardens features a dining area, casual seating, and a hammock. It is completely private from the view of the nearby houses. The back terrace with the spectacular view of the mountins and the Sea of Nicoya in the distance is completely private and is shaded from the afternoon sun by a bamboo pergola, and also has a dining area, teak lounge chairs, casual seating, a chiminea for a cozy fire in the evenings, a charcoal grill, and a hot tub with 50 therapeutic jets. Our sitters may sleep either in the master bedroom or in the guest bedroom. The master bath features a Roman tub lined with mother of pearl. The kitchen has all new high end appliances. The guest bedroom also functions as an office where you can set up your computers. There is a 32" screen TV with a firestick and Amazon Prime Video. There's a large vegetable garden and fruit trees in a pasture below the house, and you are welcome to harvest anything that's ready to eat. There is a beautiful walking path that winds through the whole community and stretches roughly a half mile in length. At the end of the interior road is an earthen stairway with rails leading down to a little stream where you can sit in peaceful stillness and watch the morpho butterflies drift by.
San Ramon, the City of Poets, is an easy ten minute drive away, where you will find everything you will need for your stay. There's a Mas X Menos supermarket, a Maxi Pali supermarket, a couple of shopping malls, hundreds of little stores carrying all kinds of goods, scores of restaurants serving a wide range of cuisines, a movie theater, a beautiful central park and cathedral, a hospital, and private medical care at Jackson Memorial Medical Center. One of the best dentists in Costa Rica is right here at the Smile Dental Clinic which is right across the street from the hospital. In this new age of medical tourism, you might think about having some dental work done here for less than half what you would pay in the US by a brilliant young dentist who trained at the best universities in the US and who speaks impeccable English.
Our home features a high end security system with motion sensors in every room and sensors on all the doors and windows. Our security service, S. E. S. is located downtown, and has 24 hour monitoring service that includes an armed guard who can be at the house within 10 minutes if the alarms go off. We will let them know in advance that you will be there and will give them your cell number. If there's an "oops" and you accidentally set off the alarm, that's not a problem. They always call to see if everything is alright before sending a guard. If you don't answer your phone, they'll assume that everything's not alright and will send the guard. That said, we live in a very safe neighborhood.
Our neighbors are all friendly and helpful should something come up. We will leave you their contact information.
- Day tripping: Day tripping will be easy since we will lend you our car. We're within an hour of the nearest Pacific beaches, and there are also beautiful day trips you can take to volcanic hot springs, such as Baldi, Tabacon, Silencio del Campo and Termales del Bosque. They're all located around an hour and a half from our house. You can also find beautiful waterfall parks even closer. There are also places to go zip-lining and hikng.
