Breathe out in Provence: Cotignac
AVAILABLE TO SWAP OCTOBER 1ST TO APRIL 30TH (we rent the house out in July / August)
Our Villa Miraval is a luxurious home that sleeps 6, beautifully furnished, with an extraordinary view over olive groves, pine forest, vineyards and mountains. It is 8-10 minutes’ stroll into the lively and exceptionally pretty village of Cotignac with plenty of places to eat and drink without having to get in the car.
Cotignac is one of the ‘Plus Beaux Villages de France’. Aix-en-Provence an hour’s drive. Nice and Marseille airports about 1 hr 15 minutes. The Gorge du Verdon is half an hour.
Inside the house
There are two parts to it, connected by a door, perfect if grandparents, a young couple or teenage children want a bit of privacy or have different waking hours. The main house (180m2) is over two floors and gives you breath taking views from every room. The one-bedroom house is all on one-level. Both houses have their own terraces looking out over the valleys. There are terracotta-tiled floors throughout and it’s luxuriously furnished because it’s our home six months of the year.
The main house
On the ground floor is a large living room flooded by sunlight, which opens out onto terraces through six large glass doors. It has plenty of comfortable seating, a huge wooden table that sits 10, and a Smart TV for watching a film in the evening. In the colder months, there’s underfloor heating and a large fireplace with logs. The new kitchen has two SMEG ovens (one convection/microwave, and one convection/steamer), a SMEG hob, a dishwasher and fridge/freezer. There’s a toilet downstairs too.
Upstairs, you have two bedrooms and a Provencal-tiled bathroom with separate shower and bath. The master bedroom has four large windows so when you’re lying in bed you can watch the sunrise on the left, then see the valley turn orange through the floor-to-ceiling window at the foot of the bed, before the forest turns pink through the window on your right. It makes us grin every morning. There’s a desk for quiet working . The other bedroom has two single beds which can be attached securely into a king.
The little house
It is all one level and has a kitchen/diner which opens onto a living room with two sets of glass doors onto its own terrace, a good-sized bedroom with a king bed, and a big Provencal-tiled bathroom with bath and shower over the bath. The kitchen has a two-ring hob, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. There’s heating in all the rooms.
There’s fast broadband everywhere in the property, and a smart TV in both big and little houses so you can log on to your own Netflix, Disney+ etc accounts. Good phone signal.
Outside the house
The house perches on a steep hill, round the curve in the valley from Cotignac. So although you can walk down to the village in 8-10 minutes, (it’s a steep walk) or drive there in two, it’s extremely tranquil. We have three sets of friendly neighbours, so you aren’t isolated, but everyone has plenty of space from each other so it’s private.
We have 5 terraces going down the hill. On the top terrace is a big summer kitchen with a plancha, oven, fridge, dishwasher and washing machine, plus a table to seat 6, a large sofa for afternoon snoozing, and table football. This leads out onto a terrace that goes the whole way round the main house and joins with the terrace of the little house. There are plenty of spaces for sitting, eating and gazing. You can take breakfast at the outside kitchen table, watching fingers of cloud beneath you making the mountains on the horizon look like islands. Or have an afternoon glass of rosé in warm late-year, blazing sunshine – we were still doing this on Christmas Day.
On the next terrace down is a saltwater infinity pool. It’s open all year but not heated! Then there are three terraces with olive trees that are left to the birds and bees. The whole garden is completely enclosed – our dog thinks he has come to heaven.
The location
The village itself is a gem. Unlike in many villages in France, you’ll see people here all the time. Even in the middle of winter, there are still bars and restaurants open in the village and there’s still live music and life! There are winding cobbled lanes, surprising little stone seating areas with fountains, a charming square with an ancient belltower and cats sunning themselves, and a long central square of old Provencal town-houses with a very good market on Tuesday mornings. The village is old, especially the part that nestles under a high cliff that looks like melting rock. You can visit the troglodyte houses at certain times of year.
You can get all the food you need at the market which has meat, fish and cheese stalls as well as great stalls selling tagines ready to eat when you get home, and all the vegetables you can eat including every kind of mushroom you can think of in early Autumn. There are two good boulangerie/patisseries, a butcher, flower shop, pottery, a few small galleries and antique shops, and other shops, and a very good cinema. Plus an excellently stocked supermarket.
Out the back of the house is the top of the hill on which sits a 16th century Provencal church which is popular with pilgrims. It sits at the edge of a pine forest which extends behind it for miles, and which includes a 3km lovely wide path to a monastery. Half way along it you can take a rocky path down through the trees into the village, walking over the top of a waterfall and down along the ancient lanes at the bottom of the cliff into a pretty square with our favourite place for breakfast or lunch.

Dogs, cleaning and heating
Our dog is a good traveller and doesn’t eat furniture and we don’t let him on sofas or beds, whether at home or when we’re staying somewhere. We welcome your dog and know they’ll love running around in our big, enclosed garden, but ask that you keep them off the furniture and beds. Many thanks.
There’s a cleaning fee of €100 or €150 with a dog. Because everyone is different and heating is so expensive now, we ask for a heating charge of euros €75 per week.
Things to do
Apart from sitting and gazing at the view which changes with the light and the weather – you’ll see what we mean, it is mesmerising and hours can go by ! – there’s plenty to do in the autumn and winter.
Eating
These places are open in the autumn/winter in Cotignac but please bear in mind that this is when they also take their annual holidays so they may be shut for a month at some point.
We love breakfast or lunch here on market day: https://www.facebook.com/letempsdepose/
Picotte in the village has a beautiful outdoor terrace at the back for warm days, and is cosy and very pretty inside for colder times. A friendly young team making interesting food. If you’re a veggie, you can let them know in advance and they’ll make you something lovely: https://www.picotte-provence.fr/
This is the place to sit and people-watch while you eat decent food or just stop for a ‘vin chaud’ or a beer: https://www.facebook.com/cafedelunioncotignac/
Probably the most upmarket restaurant in Cotignac, set in magical gardens on the top of the hill with a small changing menu: https://www.loucalen.com/en/home/
A microbrewery with an outside bar serving their own beers and platters of food, with a big summer terrace at the back and a large room upstairs for live music most weeks through autumn and winter: https://latufcraftbeer.com/en/
Just outside Cotignac, planted in a vineyard is this lovely restaurant: https://restaurant-leclosdesvignes.com/
Also just outside the village is this formal small restaurant with a fixed menu you should check before going to make sure you like what they have that night: https://www.lemasdecotignac.fr/
Our go-to restaurant in the next village, teeny, always good, always welcoming: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100054888704802
For lunch in a Michelin-star restaurant, this is about 30 mins drive, but may be closed January to March: https://www.chateauberne.com/gastronomie/restaurant-etoile/
Shops
As well as Cotignac’s own, there’s a big market in Lorgues, another in Aups, one in Salernes for a Sunday morning potter before having lunch in the square, and a splendid one in Aix. Aix also has beautiful shops and endless places to eat and drink. Marseille and Nice are easily accessible for a day trip.
Golf
You have two top golf courses nearby. Barbaroux, designed by Pete Dye, is 35 minutes drive and has a spa too: https://www.barbaroux.com Golf Sainte Baume is 45 minutes away: https://www.golfsaintebaume.com/fr/
Nature
As well as lots of walks in the hills and forest behind us, Provence Verte is a treasure chest of natural beauty. At Sillans-la-Cascade you can take a path to a high waterfall tumbling into a natural pool: https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=sillans+la+cascade+video&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:bb6b5f43,vid:DEXTSvtaAMs
For big-scale natural drama, you can drive on half an hour to the Gorge du Verdon – Europe’s longest and deepest gorge. In the summer, the narrow road round it can be a bit of a scary drive with too many cars, but in the autumn and winter it’s quiet and you can stop easily: https://www.verdontourisme.com/en/the-verdon/the-verdon-gorges-the-largest-canyon-in-europe/
The vineyards of Provence
In the autumn and winter, people have plenty of time to share their wines with you. There are vineyards which will welcome you all around Cotignac and for miles around: https://www.chateauberne.com/

The sea
You can be at the Mediterranean in an hour by car, but unlike the summer, you won’t be stuck in an endless traffic jam. Although many places on the Côte d’Azur are quiet, even closed between November and the end of March, places like Sanary sur Mer are still buzzing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN6-pZ0LACA
