Welcome to Richmond
From its gritty working-class past, Richmond has evolved into a coveted neighbourhood that marries Melbourne’s great loves – footy and food.
Taking its name from London's Richmond Hill, the sporting mecca the Melbourne Cricket Ground is arguably Richmond’s most famous landmark, where the roar of “yellow and black” emanates from supporters of the Punt Road-based AFL team, the Tigers. Proximity to the tennis centre, home of the Australian Open, AAMI Park and the Yarra River make the suburb more popular still.
Within just three kilometres of the CBD, Richmond’s old red brick warehouses and humble workers cottages have been turned over by cashed-up young professionals and creatives, with permit zones lining the streets of multi-million-dollar properties.
The Richmond Hill heritage walk celebrates 11 of the suburb’s historic and noteworthy properties. Prior to European settlement, the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people lived on the land now known as the City of Yarra.
The "struggle town" image remains a proud part of Tigerland history, but Richmond today is excitingly diverse. Even its main shopping strips have their own distinctive flavour. Swan Street is home to small-batch gelato, hatted restaurants and hipster fast-casual outlets, and to another Richmond icon, The Corner Hotel, which once hosted an impromptu show by the Rolling Stones.
Grittier Victoria Street is a thriving Little Saigon of Vietnamese groceries, pho shops and cheap-and-cheerful restaurants. It is also the site of Melbourne’s IKEA debut.
Following its 1980s heyday as a fashion outlet destination, Bridge Road has been rebuilding. Now, cafes rub shoulders with an eclectic mix – a hip tattoo parlour, party superstore and beautiful handmade leather boot boutique – but empty shop fronts still await their reincarnation. Gleadell Street Market, which runs between Bridge Road and Highett Street, is a popular Saturday morning destination for local and seasonal fare.
