Le mot de la fin
1. The road to get here should be seen as an adventure! It is a 20 minute drive on a gravel road from the turnoff off the N2, which starts with a few areas of corrugations and towards the end has some quite deep ridges and pot holes which need to be managed slowly and carefully. One doesn’t need a 4x4 as such, but an all-wheel-drive or at least a car with slightly higher ground clearance is recommended.
2. You may already know that South Africa has a power supply problem which has been going for many years now in which they limit the power supply through what they call ”load shedding”. Load shedding is an energy utility’s method of reducing demand on the energy generation system by temporarily switching off the distribution of energy to certain geographical areas. On average they switch it off for 2 or 4 hours per day at separate intervals. The cottage is not connected to our solar back-up system for the main house so at certain times of day, you will not be able to use the electric oven, sockets or lights. We do however supply battery lanterns and candles for when this happens at night and there is always the BBQ for alternative outdoor cooking arrangements - we will also supply you with firewood.
3. There is also no DSTV television - only a DVD player with some old DVDs and a TV screen, so be ready for old fashioned entertainment. The focus here is on nature anyway! :-)
4. We are off the gid and therefore rely on rainfall for our water so please be considerate during the dryer months and use water sparingly.
