Ce que vous allez adorer dans ce logement
Hello! My name is Kathy. I'm a writer, and my partner, Nick, is a businessperson. We are both in our 70's.
If possible, we would like to do a home exchange with our daughters and their teenage families—10 in total.
Our home is a charming Victorian house steeped in history. Built in the late 19th century, in 1899, it reflects the architectural elegance of the Victorian era, with its characteristic stone façade, sash windows, and intricate detailing. The property is situated in Ilkley, on a quiet residential street, a spa town renowned for its Victorian heritage, which blossomed during the period due to the popularity of hydrotherapy. From the house, it is a 10-minute walk into the town centre.
The house was constructed as part of Ilkley’s development as a fashionable retreat, attracting affluent families seeking the clean air and therapeutic waters of the Yorkshire Dales. Over the decades, our house has been a family home, retaining many original features such as fireplaces, high ceilings, and decorative cornices while adapting to modern comforts. Its rich history echoes the prosperity and culture of Victorian Ilkley, offering a glimpse into the town’s past as a hub of health, leisure, and refined living. We have a large garden (as seen in the photos) with a stream at the bottom. It is very pretty and peaceful. We are avid gardeners.
We have very successfully exchanged homes nine times from our old house in London (We moved to Ilkley in 2019 to escape the chaos of London!) We have home exchanged to Italy twice, New York, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Vancouver, Victoria BC, France (several times), Norway, and Sweden. All trips were very successful, and we respected each home and looked after it as if it were our own.

Ce que vous allez adorer dans le quartier
Nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, Ilkley is home to approximately 14,000 residents and is surrounded by picturesque countryside. It is also a charming spa town offering West Yorkshire’s breathtaking landscapes and historic attractions. Surrounded by rolling hills and the famed Ilkley Moor, it’s a paradise for walkers, cyclists, and nature lovers. Dominating the landscape are the iconic Cow and Calf rocks—a striking cliff formation paired with a massive boulder—named after the cattle that graze the expansive moorland stretching south of the town.
Sample the local independent shops, FAMOUS Betty's cafe (https://www.bettys.co.uk), nightlife, and dip in the town's cold water lido swimming pool (on warm days). The lure of God's Own Country is said to have brought Charles Darwin to the town in the 1800s to its rejuvenating spa waters. Also, look out for Olicana (an ancient Roman fort), still behind its Elizabethan Manor House.
Ilkley is ideally located near some of England’s most historic sites: (visit the dramatic seaside town of Whitby, inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula;) explore York’s medieval streets and iconic Minster, or soak in the elegance of Harrogate's historic baths.
The region also offers a wealth of "wow" experiences: wander through Brontë Country in Haworth, where the famous sisters penned their novels, or visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire, a beautifully preserved Victorian village with arts venues and riverside strolls. Art lovers will adore the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, an open-air gallery featuring world-class sculptures set against scenic landscapes. With Leeds and London easily accessible by train (just two hours from Leeds to London), plus proximity to the Lake District and Scotland, a home exchange in Ilkley offers the perfect blend of natural beauty, historical intrigue, and vibrant cultural experiences—a gateway to diverse adventures, from the tranquil beauty of the Dales to the captivating history of Northern England.
