Beech Mountain is literally the coolest town in North Carolina. At an elevation of 5,506 feet, it's the highest town east of the Mississippi. Summers are cool with prime hiking, mountain biking, fishing, and birding. Winters bring a wonderland for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and sledding. And don't forget the brilliant fall colors that extend for weeks. In the center of town, you can find a variety of restaurants and the beloved Fred's General Mercantile.
