Get warm and comfy in our historic gem of a cottage! The space is fully restored, steps from Churton St. downtown and all the eateries, bakeries, shops, and sites that quaint historic Hillsborough has to offer. A full kitchen, bathroom, upstairs bedroom, and downstairs living room (with queen size sleeper sofa) allow for a home-away-from-home set-up and plenty of rustic charm and history!
The cottage itself is the renovated historic “summer kitchen” to a historic Southern property! The fireplace is 10’ wide and still has the original crane arm and “ovens@ for cooking bread. The heart pine floors (some ~10" wide!) hail from the early 1800s, while the large windows give the room a sunny glow. High ceilings and original brick take you back in time, while modern amenities (and a large pool!) make your stay uber-comfortable.
The Cottage sits beside a Southern estate, built in 1799. The grounds are situated on 2 acres, mere blocks from the center of historic Hillsborough and the home is rich in history.
The property was originally owned by James Hogg, an 18th century businessman and one of the founders of the nearby University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The original house, consisting of five rooms in the eastern portion of the house, is believed to have been built in the late 1790’s. It was later enlarged in 1853 in “the most modern fancy style” according to the Hillsborough Recorder, and the western portion, the central tower and the large porches were added to create a what the architect believed looked like a picturesque Italian villa style. This brick summer kitchen served as a fully functioning kitchen (and it’s separation from the main house was also key in making sure the main house didn’t burn down in the event of a fire).

Hillsborough is a small town with big history! This was the capital of North Carolina territory before the Revolutionary War in 1780’s. There are a huge number of historic homes in Hillsborough, one belonging to a signer of the Declaration of Independence. For fans of Outlander, you’ll also recognize Hillsborough from season 4 of the show, when it features prominently as the setting for the show, post-Wilmington.
We’re close to world famous University towns and their sports teams, like Duke, and the UNC Tarheels. And only 25 minutes from Raleigh, NC’s capital. Hillsborough itself has a vibrant arts community, walking trails, community music nights, and its own famous health food co-op, but to mention a public library, parks, and plenty of restaurants!
The broader community includes Chapel Hill, home to Univeristy of North Carolina Tarheel basketball team, with a bustling college town vibe, museums, theatres, cinemas, a planetarium, and more.
Durham is home to Duke’s Blue Devils, and of course, the iconic Durham Bulls baseball franchise! With tons on outdoor community venues, sporting events, restaurants, music venues, and a world class Performing Arts Center (hosting Broadway to Kevin Hartt), the city of Durham is sure to provide a ton of fun!
Raleigh is also a few minutes away and is best known as NC’ state Capitol. In addition to the State Legislature, Raleigh has comedy clubs, professional hockey, the symphony, as well as state fairgrounds, restaurants and more!
If you have any questions about North Carolina’s iconic Triangle region, let me know!
